The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 created income tax benefits for students attending an eligible educational institution with qualified education expenses. Indiana University is required by the IRS to file an annual tuition statement, better known as Form 1098-T, for students who are U.S. Citizens or permanent residents pursuing a degree and have reportable transactions such as tuition and mandatory fees, grants or scholarships. Form 1098-T can assist taxpayers in determining eligibility for Education Tax Credits or Deductions.

The IRS Form 1098-T is only to be used to calculate the amount of qualified educational expenses incurred for the year to claim an education credit/deduction on a U.S. tax return. Students who receive more financial aid than incurred educational expenses will not receive a 1098-T. Students who meet any of the criteria listed below will not receive a Form 1098-T:

  • Students who received more financial aid than eligible tuition and fees
  • Students whose balance was paid as a part of a "formal billing arrangement" (aka sponsored students)
  • Students who are nonresident aliens
  • Students who incurred only expenses for courses that did not earn academic credit

Students are encouraged to consent to electronic delivery of the Form 1098-T. The form will be received through One.IU and can be viewed by Third Party Users who have been granted access. The electronic form is received earlier than the mailed paper form, which is required to be post-marked by January 31st each year. Indiana University does not provide tax advice. Please consult your tax preparer/advisor to Determine your eligibility for educational tax credits.
