| IUPUI TECHNOLOGY FEE
(mandatory
fee) Today, technology is a "given" in every field from
art to zoology, and its use is increasing at an ever-faster pace. IUPUI recognizes that we
are truly entering the Information age." Students who graduate will enter a labor
market that puts a premium on skills for using information in all forms. The U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics estimates that the country's economy will develop about 6 million new
jobs in the next decade -- and that 5 million of these will be in the
"information-knowledge" sector of the economy. IUPUI graduates deserve an
education that equips them to take advantage of these opportunities.
IUPUI is well on its way to becoming a national model of
urban public higher education, in part because of the commitment of Indiana University and
this campus to give students the best education possible using the technological tools
available. By reallocating existing funds and using monies designated by the state, the
campus has come a long way in its computing and technological capabilities -- such as new
computing clusters, network communications development, the technological renovation in
Lecture Hall 101, satellite connections, electronic mail, library catalogue, dial-up
access to mainframe computers, dial-out access to external databases, and cable
networking.
Your technology fee assessment was based on your class
standing as determined by your academic unit at the time your semester fees were
calculated. You may have some questions, such as:
I'm not taking any technology courses; do I need to pay the
technology fee?
Today's technology is related directly or indirectly to nearly all
courses. Computers are an integral part of the curriculum. Computing capabilities and
information systems, such as those In the library, are available to all students.
Are graduate and professional schools included?
Some are and others have incorporated their technology fees into their
credit hour or flat fee rates.
What will I get for my money?
Funds generated from the IUPUI technology fee are used to partially fund
the ever-increasing student demand for computer capabilities, upgrade computer clusters,
expand the permanent student user-identification accounts, expand computer consulting,
upgrade learning centers; and more.
What does the bursar do with the income?
After fees are received each semester, a distribution of all Technology Fee
income is made.
- undergraduate technology fees: A predetermined portion
of the fees paid are distributed directly to the campus technology department for general
infrastructure support. All remaining dollars are distributed directly to each
school based on enrollment.
- graduate or professional school technology fees. 100% of
fees collected are distributed directly to the school.
